Teeth Whitening

If your teeth are healthy but aren’t as bright as you’d like, Dr. Kohler provides Zoom!® in-office teeth whitening for his Winnetka and Chicago-area patients. To restore a youthful sparkle to your smile takes very little time, is completely painless, and can whiten your teeth by up to eight shades.

The Whitening Procedure

We offer in-office and take-home teeth whitening systems, both of which use a peroxide-based whitening gel to penetrate enamel and dentin and break up years’ worth of staining in little time.

During an in-office appointment, Dr. Kohler will apply Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed gel to your teeth, adjusted in intensity to address the severity of your discoloration. The gel is activated using a special light. The entire process takes under an hour.

Our at-home bleaching kits (Philips NiteWhite) create a whiter smile in just one use, and patients can fully achieve desired results in seven to 14 days. Customized whitening trays are created to hold the whitening gel in place while you sleep.

Dr. Kohler recommends combining both in-office and take-home teeth whitening for superior, long-lasting results. We also offer the service at a discounted rate to our Invisalign® patients.

Am I a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?

Teeth stains and discoloration can appear yellow or grayish and fall into one of two categories:

  • Intrinsic: Staining that occurs within the tooth and affects the dentin (or porous inner tissue) of the tooth. Intrinsic staining can be caused by mouth trauma, antibiotics, excessive exposure to fluoride, or genetic factors.
  • Extrinsic: Mostly-preventable stains that occur in the outer layer of teeth. These stains can be caused by tobacco, deeply-colored foods (like berries or soy sauce), coffee, tea, wine, soda, acidic foods, or plaque buildup.

Our teeth whitening systems are able to address both types of staining. During a consultation, Dr. Kohler will determine the cause of your discoloration and recommend the best whitening options for you.
