Restore Dental Health with Treatment for Cavities

Untreated dental cavities can pose serious risks to your oral health. The teeth cannot repair themselves from the damage caused by dental cavities. This is why it is important to seek treatment at the earliest signs of tooth decay. Fortunately, there are a variety of restorative dentistry treatments available to repair the damage caused by dental cavities. To find out which treatments are right for you, we welcome you to schedule a consultation with Chicago dentist Craig Kohler.

Top Treatments for Dental Cavities

If left untreated, dental cavities can lead to major dental problems like root canal infections and tooth loss. Although there are different types of treatments available for repairing dental cavities, all treatments include the removal of decayed areas and cleaning the damaged tooth to leave only the healthy portions of the tooth in place. Once the decay is removed, the tooth can be repaired with one of the following treatments:

  • Tooth-colored dental fillings: Silver fillings are no longer the only option for treating dental cavities. Tooth-colored fillings are now available, and they provide the benefits of traditional metal fillings with the added perk of looking natural and unnoticeable. They are made of composite resin, which can be custom colored to match the surrounding teeth. Even old metal fillings can be replaced.
  • Inlays and Onlays: Inlays and Onlays are another tooth-colored options for treating dental cavities. Made of porcelain, inlays, and onlays can restore both dental health and appearance. Inlays and Onlays are similar. However, inlays are used to treat smaller areas of decay isolated to the cusps. Onlays are used to treat larger portions of decay that may extend beyond one or more cusps.
  • Porcelain dental crowns: Porcelain dental crowns are a good treatment option for those with large fillings or significant dental damage. Porcelain dental crowns are custom-made tooth-shaped restorations that completely cover damaged teeth, restoring strength, appearance, and dental function.

Tips to Prevent Dental Cavities

Dental cavities most commonly form from a build-up of plaque, tartar, and bacteria. Foods that are high in sugar and acidic content can also contribute to the formation of dental cavities. Although there are treatments to repair the damage caused by dental cavities, preventing cavities, to begin with, is preferable. Here are some tips to help you protect your oral health and prevent dental cavities:

  • Brush for a full two minutes at least twice a day
  • Floss along each side of each tooth at least once a day
  • Rinse your mouth with water in between brushings and after meals
  • Chew sugar-free gum after eating to remove food remnants and plaque between brushings
  • See your dentist every six months for regular check-ups and cleanings
  • Limit sugary, acidic foods and drinks
  • Schedule a consultation at the earliest signs of damage and decay
