Benefits of Micro aesthetic dentistry

Magnification makes an enormous difference to the quality and accuracy of dental treatment. At Dr. Kohler’s office, we see beyond and go beyond practicing microscopic dentistry.  Many dentists are limiting themselves to low-magnification loupes or even do their work without magnification. In the examination, dentists working without magnification are more likely to leave small pockets of decay.

Over time, this tooth decay can cause holes that go deep into your teeth, sometimes all the way to the root.  Untreated decay could result in a need for large fillings and possible root canals. Early detection can prevent costly treatments compared to the low cost of a small cavity filling.

Crown preparation using a Microscope

To prepare a tooth for a crown, Dr. Kohler will have to reduce the top and sides of the tooth to allow enough space for the lab to fabricate a cap to cover the tooth and restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance. Depending on why your tooth needs the crown, Dr. Kohler may need to do what is called a build-up. This means the material is being added back to the tooth to have enough solid structure for the crown to be cemented on. Using a microscope throughout the entire procedure makes it possible for Dr. Kohler to remove as little tooth structure as possible and allows the tooth to have a “2nd chance” if needed. Dr. Kohler wants to provide his patients with the best treatment possible and have their teeth for life.

What happens if a crown is not fitted properly?

Sometimes crowns fall off. Reasons include decaying of the underlying tooth and loosening of the cementing material used to place the crown. This often happens because of a poorly fitted crown/preparation.  By taking the time and technology to collectively improve some of the “small stuff” Dr. Kohler’s patients are being rewarded with functional and aesthetic results that we can consistently be proud of.
